Catherine Bellini, winner of the 2025 Roséns Linnaeus prize in Botany
The Prize in Botany is awarded to Catherine Bellini in recognition of her research and commitment to promoting international cooperation. The Rosén Linné Prizes are awarded every three years to two deserving researchers in botany and zoology residing in Sweden
Long-term missions and secondments at INRAE constitute strategic mobility schemes that promote the development of scientific collaboration within partner laboratories, both in France and abroad. These schemes represent a major lever for the establishment and strengthening long-term research partnerships, particularly within the framework of international cooperation projects. It is within this context that Catherine Bellini was able to extend her research activities within an “off-site” laboratory created in 2005 between UPSC and INRAE.
INRAE director of Research at the IJPB (France) and Professor at UPSC (Umeå University, Sweden),Catherine Belliniconducts research in two different areas. At the UPSC, her team is studying the development of adventitious roots, a key and limiting step in the vegetative propagation of economically important tree species. At the IJPB, as part of the "Carbon, Allocation, Transport and Signaling" CATS team led by Sylvie Dinant, she focuses on sugar transport and carbon allocation, as well as their role in plant development and their interaction with the environment.
The work carried out under the bilateral then trilateral agreement between INRAE, UPSC and CRAG has given rise to more than 200 joint publications co-signed by teams of the three institutions. Supported by funding from national research agencies , this research has also contributed, over the years, to the training of young French scientists, some of whom now hold positions in one or other of these institutes. Eight symposia have been organised alternately by INRAE, UPSC and CRAG, facilitating interactions among researchers from the three institutes and contributing to the establishment of collaborations. Notably, Catherine Bellini obtained a total of 15 two-year postdoctoral fellowships from the Swedish Karl Kempe Foundation for bilateral projects. This funding has significantly strengthened collaborations between the institutes and supported the training of young researchers. The Rosén Linné Prize in Botany, awarded by the Royal Physiographic Society of Lund, Sweden, was presented to Catherine Bellini and Alexandre Antonelli, during a ceremony on the 2nd of December 2025 in Lund, in recognition of their research achievements.
Over the coming years, Catherine Bellini intends to complete the research currently being conducted at UPSC and the IJPB before her retirement. The trilateral partnership, now being renewed for the 2026–2030 period and jointly coordinated by Rozenn Le Hir (IJPB, INRAE), Olivier Keech (UPSC) and Maria Lois (CRAG), will ensure the continuation of exchanges and collaborations, as well as the international training of young researchers.
