Science Festival: come and discover the world of research and plants!
As every year, the IJPB actively participated in the Science Festival with a scientific discovery workshops for 2024.
IJPB scientists are committed to making research and laboratory experiments accessible to the general public. On October 4 and 5, a workshop will be held at the at the Campus AgroParisTech and on October 5 and 6, three workshops at Paris-Saclay Science Village (ENS Paris-Saclay)
How Friendly Microbes Help Plants Grow
October 4 (for schools, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm) and Saturday, October 5, Campus AgroParisTech. Registration required
Observe microbes under the microscope, compare plants, and discover the fascinating phenomenon of symbiosis! In this workshop, dive into the world of symbiosis and learn how fungi and soil microbes help plants feed and grow. With the help of a microscope, you will be able to observe fungi and microbes. Workshop led by the "Symbiotic Nitrogen Acquisition in Plant-Microbe Systems"SYNAPS team
The Benefit of Spelling Errors for Adapting to the Environment
Saturday, October 5, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Village des Sciences Paris-Saclay
Genetic diversity within and between species defines the geographic distribution of plants around the world. Some plants can adapt to different environments, while others cannot. How can this be explained? What is the source of this diversity? By mimicking the synthesis of a DNA strand, we will illustrate the cellular mechanisms that generate this diversity and its effects on plant morphology and their ability to adapt.
Guttation: The Jewels of Leaves
Saturday, October 5, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm, and Sunday, October 6, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm, Village des Sciences Paris-Saclay
In nature, early in the morning, you might see water droplets forming on the edges of leaves. This is called guttation, a phenomenon often mistaken for dew. What is it? What purpose does it serve? What causes it? Through an experiment, uncover the mystery behind these "pearls" of leaves!
Oils from the Ends of the Earth
Sunday, October 6, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm, Village des Sciences Paris-Saclay
Can you recognize oils from the far corners of the world? Smells, colors, textures, and origins will guide you through this exotic journey. Vegetable oils and their remarkable chemical properties are full of resources: food, cosmetics, and green chemistry.
Workshops based on research developed at the Institute Jean-Pierre Bourgin for Plant Sciences.
