The IJPB at the 7th "Vivaces Festival!"

This Year's Theme: "Does the Beauty of Plants Have a Meaning?" - October 12, 2024, Parc de la Villette, Paris
Since 2018, the "Vivaces! Festival" has been a major fall event in Paris, centered around its perennial plant market. Each year, the festival offers a "discovery journey" for the whole family to provide a different perspective on the plant world and its interactions with the rest of the living world, featuring insights from nurserymen, naturalists, artists, gardeners, and scientists. It highlights the qualities of perennial plants and the people who produce them, as well as the incredible capacities of the plant world in relation to wildlife. It suggests more appropriate gardening gestures in favor of biodiversity.

This 7th edition questions the beauty of plants. Many people are amazed by plants. They can evoke emotions in us, surprise us, or stimulate our senses. But what does the beauty of living organisms really mean? Are the colors, smells, shapes, and textures only there to dazzle our eyes? What roles do these attributes play in the lives of plants, insects, and birds?

A Discovery Tour Presented by IJPB, 2:30 pm, Jardin Passagers at Parc de la Villette, Paris
As a guided walk exploring plants, Alexis Peaucelle, a researcher from the "Primary Cell Wall" PAR team, will showcase the beauty of plants through their mathematical aspects by discussing phyllotaxis and the shapes of their epidermal cells: the epithelial cells. He will also present growth movements and the formation of rectilinear shapes. He will discuss plant beauty as a mathematical object and address interactions between plants, as well as between plants and insects, involving volatile hormones, light, and sound. Finally, he will talk about plant growth, focusing on their cell wall and how its components are crucial for ecological transition and the green economy. This walk, one of the 6 stages of the festival that question our human perceptions and emotions in relation to the life of the plants.

It's a free event for the general public, aimed at all those curious about plants, from neophytes to professionals.
