Tribute Day to Jean-François Morot-Gaudry
Introduction to the Day
Jean-François Morot-Gaudry led the laboratory entitled “Plant Metabolism and Nutrition” for more than fifteen years, which later became the “Plant Nitrogen Nutrition” laboratory (1987–2021). He initiated and developed numerous fundamental and applied research projects in close collaboration with the scientists and technicians who were part of his team throughout this period. The research covered a wide range of topics, from field experiments to the use of plant molecular genetics techniques. For example, in applied research, his work included studies on the "coulure la vigne", endive physiology, crop systems involving nutrient recycling between fish farming and cultivated plants, and the impact of seaweed extracts on plant growth and development. Several advanced analytical biochemistry techniques were also developed in his laboratory, drawing on his expertise and deep knowledge of plant nutrition, particularly carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Another major highlight was the use of genetic variability in model and cultivated plants (Arabidopsis and maize) to better understand plant physiology with regard to nitrogen use, which had a significant impact on plant biology both nationally and internationally.Throughout this day, scientists who worked in his unit will review the history and scientific impact of some of these research themes, which remain highly relevant in the field of plant biology.
